Thematic Courses

 

If you take Spanish Immersion courses at Habla any week of the year you will learn Spanish through meaningful conversation, writing, and the reading of authentic, culturally relevant texts. Habla also offers special thematic courses at different times of the year. These courses are shaped around the expertise of our teachers or coincide with a particular Mexican holiday. All thematic courses are offered for all levels of Spanish language learners: beginning, intermediate, and advanced.

   Day Of The Dead   
 
Learn Spanish through the lens of cultural traditions, artworks, essays, and literature that examine Mexico’s spiritual and playful relationship with death. In addition to the language courses at Habla, we will visit the Day of the Dead altars and parades around the city of Mérida.

Improve your Spanish in this course while exploring various texts, songs, photos, and other documents that illuminate how the Mexican revolution and independence transformed Mexican culture, contributed to the development of the national identity, and helped form the social and political imagination of modern Mexico.

This unique Spanish course will focus on exploring the delicious flavors, smells, and textures that characterize Mexico and its cuisine. You’ll read literature, watch films, and of course experience a variety of foods and beverages from the different regions of Mexico.

   The Virgin of Guadalupe   
 
One of the most marvelous times to visit Mexico is when people make pilgrimages to the shrines dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The air is filled with fireworks, horns honking, and people dressed in colorful regalia. In this secular course, learn more about how the Virgin of Guadalupe is a cultural icon for Mexico, see how she has been represented in art and literature, and most importantly let us take you to visit shrines dedicated to her that are well off the beaten path.

   The Rhythm Of Mexico   
 
Explore the different musical styles that have brought together communities throughout Mexico’s history. We’ll examine how music is an amalgam of cultures—colonial, indigenous, and borrowed—that have contributed to the creation of new melodies and rhythms unique to Mexico today. In addition to learning Spanish you’ll also learn a few Latin American dance moves!
