Summer ImmersionDescription![]() EXPLORE Mexico from the Mayan ruins of Uxmal to Mérida’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. At Habla’s summer immersion program, you learn Spanish with our international team of artists and educators. Cultural and ecological excursions will tie directly into Habla’s innovative Spanish courses. Based on ideas developed at the ArtsLiteracy Project at Brown University, our approach to learning language values the creativity of both the student and the teacher. You will learn Spanish in a supportive community by reading literature, learning about ancient and contemporary art forms, and participating in the cultural traditions of Mexico. LEARN with an international team of extraordinary teachers and teaching artists. In the mornings, you will develop your Spanish by reading the literature of Mexican and Latin American authors as well as learning about the photography and visual art of Mexico. Even students new to the language will immediately begin reading poetry, songs, and stories from Mexico. Our advanced courses offer experienced students the opportunity to read and discuss significant works of Mexican literature. CREATE new and original work in photography and performance. Choose your art focus of photography or performance. Three afternoons a week, work with a Mexican teaching artist to fuse your medium and the Spanish language, in a supportive environment. All afternoon arts courses will link the art form to language development so that you will work with text, storytelling, and creative writing in conjunction with photography or performance. EXPAND your creative capacities. New to the arts? Never performed before? Our teachers view every student as an artist and we create a safe space to support you to both sharpen your voice in Spanish and help you to create collaboratively in an art form. LIVE with a local Mexican family, sharing typical Yucatecan meals and the rhythm of Yucatecan life.
