In the reception area of Habla you will see the word "create." At Habla, we believe language learning is not about working through endless textbooks and worksheets. Rather we value the improvisational and playful qualities of language. At Habla students read, write and speak in English in creative ways, even if they are just starting to learn the language. Kids, Ages 5-11

Habla’s courses for kids focus on fostering a love of English and reading books. Children will learn English by creating in multiple art forms and exploring Habla’s extensive English library of children’s books. In each class students will hear and read a story and then participate in a variety of art-making activities based on the story’s characters, vocabulary, and themes. Habla, while teaching English to students, also focuses on the fundamentals of literacy development—word recognition, phonics, and comprehension—that transfer over to learning to read in Spanish.

Teens

Beginning: In our beginning English course for teens, teachers inspire students to participate in conversation through fun and dynamic activities. Habla teaches beginning English students to find the words to describe themselves and the world around them. Students will hear and read poetry and stories in English and create their own original writing. Visual art, photographs, and film generate language in the classroom and provide a window into cultural learning. Grammar is taught with precision in order to supplement the larger goal of communicating and understanding language. By the end of the beginning level, students will be comfortable expressing themselves in English using the present, past and future tenses.

Intermediate: At the intermediate level, Habla focuses on engaging students in conversations where they can feel comfortable talking about their lives and sharing their ideas. Students will also deepen their capacity to communicate in the language using complex vocabulary and more sophisticated structures. In addition students will exercise their new language capacities by making art together. At this stage, students will write in a wide range of genres and share their work with each other in a supportive classroom setting.

Advanced: At the advanced level, students are certainly communicative in the language and are now interested in deepening their linguistic and cultural experience to a level of native fluency. In this class, students will have conversations about issues relevant to their lives and the world around them. They will explore English by reading interesting texts in a variety of genres. Students will learn how to write with more sophisticated structures. This course will offer the fundamental skills necessary for studying or living abroad.

Adults

Students will explore these issues through multimedia forms such as music, radio, film, photography as well as various text genres. This course will advance fluent level conversation and writing necessary for professional and academic work.
