The Vision

HABLA connects people across communities, across continents, building a world of understanding in which culture is not a barrier, but rather a possibility.

We believe that the power of imagination can help us reconceive our community spaces. HABLA the school and center fosters transcultural environments that embrace multiple languages, literatures, arts, technologies, and the numerous literacies necessary to participate in a rapidly changing world where ideas and voices move across time and space.

The Center

Based in Merida, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsula, HABLA, the school, serves as the focal point for developing and researching arts-based approaches to language learning. Language courses are offered throughout the year in both English and Spanish.

HABLA, the center, provides an ideal space to imagine ways of teaching that sharpen students’ voices in multiple languages and through various art forms. Teachers, artists, and youth gather from around the world to teach in and learn from local communities, participate in conferences, and take courses that challenge our ideas about what it means to work in different cultural contexts.
